World Wetlands Day Observed in Garo Hills

Tura, Feb 4: World Wetlands Day was observed at Boaldari Beel in Chirakhawan village under Selsella Block, West Garo Hills, with the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.” The event was organized by the District Forest Office, East and West Garo Hills Wildlife Division, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Wetland Authority.

The program witnessed participation of over 80 attendees, including local authorities, environmentalists, and community members. Suman B. Marak, RFO, Protection Range Tura; Sengkam Sangma, President of the Garo Hills Wildlife Protection Society; Prosanto M. Marak, Headmaster of Chirakhawan SSA U.P. School; and Sena Ch. Sangma, Gounbura of Chirakhawan village, were present for the occasion.

An informative session on wetland conservation conducted by Wanri Bakodon Kharsahroh, a biologist from the Meghalaya Wetland Conservation Authority was the major highlight of the event. The session emphasized the critical role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and supporting.

An open quiz session was also conducted, encouraging awareness and knowledge-sharing on wetland.
