Guwahati, Mar 22: In a special anti-narcotics operation at Shotimari-II near the Indo-Bangla border, police seized Yaba tablets worth ₹2 crore in South Salmara Mankachar on Saturday.
“The operation was based on intelligence inputs indicating that a consignment of Yaba tablets, brought from Manipur, was about to be smuggled into Bangladesh by being thrown over the border fence. The contraband was concealed in a heap of betel nut sacks at the house of the drug smugglers,” said a police official.
The accused, identified as Sakuwat Hussain and Sanowar Hussain of South Salmara Mankachar, fled before police could apprehend them.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional SP (HQ), South Salmara Mankachar, and led by OC Mankachar PS & SI (UB) Sonudev Barman, along with personnel from Mankachar Police Station.
The Yaba tablets were tested using a Drug Detection Kit, which confirmed the presence of methamphetamine. The estimated street value of the seized contraband is approximately ₹2 crore.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that both accused have been involved in drug peddling for several years. Further inquiries are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals associated with them. An FIR is being registered, and necessary legal formalities are in progress,” the police official added.
In a separate operation on Friday, Assam Police busted a drug racket in Nagaon district, arresting one person in possession of heroin worth ₹1 crore. Acting on a specific tip-off, the police intercepted a vehicle in the Gerekiarea and seized 461 grams of heroin after a thorough search.
