Shillong, Dec 22: As 2023 draws to a close, the nation reflects on a series of harrowing incidents that left an indelible mark on the collective consciousness. Five murders, each characterised by its own disturbing details, unfolded throughout the year, sending shockwaves across India. These tragic events not only claimed lives but also underscored the darker facets of human nature. From crimes of passion to heinous acts of violence, the year has been marked by a series of unsettling narratives, serving as a stark reminder of the fragility of human life and the challenges society faces in ensuring safety and justice.
Shraddha Walker Murder Case:
On May 18, Shraddha Walker was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner, Aaftab Poonawala in Delhi’s Mehrauli. Poonawala,chopped Walker’s body into 17 pieces and stored them in his refrigerator and then disposed of the remains in a nearby forest area.
Poonawala tried to avoid detection by staying active on Walker’s social media until June 9. Meanwhile, he disposed of Walker’s body parts, engaged in relationships, even bringing one woman to his rented flat. Delhi Police filed a comprehensive 6,629-Page charge-sheet against him.
Assam woman kills husband, mother-in-law
Last year in July and August, a woman committed a gruesome crime by separately murdering her husband and mother-in-law. Following the murders, she dismembered their bodies before disposing of the body parts in the hills of neighbouring Meghalaya.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah informed reporters that Bandana Kalita (32), a gym instructor, committed the crime with the assistance of her two male associates, Dhanti Deka, a taxi driver, and Arup Deka, a vegetable seller.
Barah stated that the investigation and interrogation of the three accused unveiled that Bandana had initially murdered her mother-in-law, Shankari Dey (62), in her residence in the city’s Chandmari area on the evening of July 26 last year, with the assistance of Arup.
Saraswati Vaidya Murder in Mumbai:
Saraswati Vaidya’s murder came to light when country was still trying to get over from Shraddha’s murder case. Vaidya was murdered by Manoj Sane (56) in their flat at Mumbai’s Mira. In a similar manner, he chopped her body into more than 20 parts using tree cutters.
The incident came to light after Sane’s neighbours alerted the authorities due to a foul smell coming from his rented apartment, leading to his arrest. Following which he also confessed to boiling some of Vaidya’s body parts and feeding remains to stray dogs.
Nikki Yadav Murder Case:
The 22-year-old Nikki Yadav was murdered by her live-in partner, Sahil Gehlot (24). The incident came to light on February 14, Valentine’s Day, four days after the murder. After killing her he had concealed her body in a refrigerator at his dhaba. The same day Gehlot went on to marry another woman.
Sahil disclosed during police questioning that he and Nikki had initially intended to leave Delhi. However, their plans were derailed by an argument stemming from Sahil’s engagement. He confessed to killing Nikki after she threatened legal action against him. Subsequent inquiries revealed that Sahil had informed his family about Nikki’s reaction to his upcoming wedding. In response, his father and cousin brothers advised him on managing the situation while they handled the guests.
Nalasopara murder:
Hardik Shah, the alleged perpetrator who killed his live-in partner and concealed her body in the storage compartment of their bed in their Mumbai’s Nalasopara apartment, reportedly remained in the vicinity of the body for several hours following the murder.
Megha Dhan Singh Torvi, 35, originally from Karnataka’s Gulbarga, completed her nursing training in her hometown and later began working in Mumbai. Over the past three years, she was in a relationship with Shah and the two had been residing together in a rented apartment in Nalasopara for the last six months.
Megha served as the primary breadwinner as Shah was unemployed. Despite hailing from an affluent family, the accused had never held a job and instead indulged in reckless spending on his vices. The couple frequently argued over financial matters, leading to an incident where Shah, during one of their disputes, broke Megha’s phone. Unable to afford repairs, Megha’s mother had to send them money.
