Zenith entry makes Tura a three cornered contest for upcoming Lok Sabha polls

Must read

Shillong, March 13: The Tura prestigious Lok Sabha seat is all set to witness a three cornered contest after the All India Trinamool Congress announced the candidature of Zenith M Sangma, a former MLA, as the party’s candidate for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

The AITC announced Zenith M Sangma’s name on Tuesday evening clearing the way for the two INDIA alliance partners- Congress and AITC, to slug it out in a bastion held by NPP’s Agatha K Sangma,  daughter of Late P A Sangma and a three term MP who was also briefly a union minister of state for rural development during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure.

The stakes are clearly high for the opponents given that the Tura seat has not changed hands from the P A Sangma family for well over thirty long years.

The Congress has announced the name of sitting legislator from Gambegre, Saleng A Sangma. He was the only Congress candidate to emerge victorious from the  Garo Hills where 24 seats were up for grabs in last year’s assembly elections.

While Saleng Sangma emerged victorious, it was a major set back to the Trinamool and the once powerful former chief minister Mukul Sangma whose wife, Dikkanchi D Shira from Mahendraganj, and his younger brother Zenith M Sangma, facing defeat at the electoral battle.

Mukul Sangma himself was defeated from Tikrikilla constituency by NPP’s Jimmy D Sangma, only managing to hold on to his Songsak constituency that he won with a wafer thin margin.
