Aizawl, Dec 4: The opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) led by Lalduhoma is  registered a landslide victory, unseating the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

The supporters of ZPM started celebrating after their party was leading in most of the seats.

Speaking to the reporters, ZPM leader Lalduhoma said that he is not surprised with the results for the Mizoram state elections. “I am not surprised this is what I expected. Let the full results come out. The counting process is going on,” said Lalduhoma.

Till 12.45 PM, ZPM had won in 15 seats and was leading in 12 more seats, enroute to wining 27 seats. MNF on the other hand, had won 3 seats and was leading in 7 more, heading for a cumulative total of 10 seats. BJP has won in 2 seats, whereas Congress was leading in 1 seat.

Over 80 per cent of the state’s 8.57 lakh voters exercised their franchise in Mizoram.

A total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, were in the fray in the 40-member state assembly. A party needs to cross the halfway mark of 21 to form a government in Mizoram.

Mizoram voted on November 7 and counting of votes was supposed to begin on Sunday along with the other four states – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. But, the Election Commission of India (ECI) deferred it by a day as Sunday holds a special significance for the Christian-majority population in the state.

In 2018, the MNF won 26 seats, dislodging the Congress from power. The ZPM had won eight seats, while the Congress was relegated to third with just five seats, compared to the 34 it had won in 2013.
