Dibrugarh, Jan 21: The Tinsukia district administration and police demolished 12 more illegal rat hole mines on Tuesday. The joint operation involved district officials, police personnel, and representatives from North Eastern Coalfields (NEC).
The crackdown targeted abandoned mines in Ledo, Tirap, Tikak, and Namdang collieries. Excavators were deployed to destroy the illegal mining sites, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to eradicating such activities.
Executive Magistrate Pronamika Konwar, who oversaw the operation, vowed to persist until all illegal mines in the region were sealed. “We will not stop until every single rat hole mine is destroyed,” she stated.
This comes on the heels of another operation conducted last Saturday, during which 13 illegal mines were sealed and excavators confiscated from Bittu Pahar in NamdangCollieryy. The coordinated effort, which began early in the morning, was led by Margherita co-district Executive Magistrate Pritom Gogoi, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav, NEC officials, and personnel from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited.
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh previously announced that all illegal rat hole mines in the state would be shut down within a week. The intensified crackdown has triggered a mass exodus of coal miners from Margherita. Large groups of miners from districts such as Goalpara, Dhubri, and Hailakandi were seen leaving by train from Margherita Railway Station, marking a significant shift in the region’s mining landscape.
