SHILLONG, JAN 8: The construction of the four-lane Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge over the Brahmaputra River between Assam and Meghalaya is going on as per plan, according to cabinet minister and Phulbari legislator Abu Taher Mondal.

“Of course the Meghalaya side, little bit delayed during the construction time and we are lacking behind the Assam side. On the Assam side, they have completed almost 34-35 pillars. That is the present scenario,” Mondal told reporters on Wednesday.

The minister informed that he had visited the construction site on Meghalaya portion and “officials told me that they are on time as far as the completion of the work is concerned if there are no untoward incidents”.

Stating that the bridge will be a big game changer for the NE region, Mondal said, “Our CM always advocated for this bridge from the beginning. If this bridge is completed you will see, the major traffic towards Guwahati will be through this bridge only because this will be shortening the distance and then there are other economic reasons for which other people will follow this bridge so ultimately there will developmental activities and economic activities and moreover this will be the western entry or exit from our state towards the mainland.”

Asked, Mondal said, “The length of the bridge is 19.3 kilometres. It is believed to be the longest river bridge. I am not sure about other places on the river that the length of the bridge is there. It will have over 199 pillars so it is quite a long bridge.”

“Further, the length will be reduced from Phulbari to Dhubri. More than 200 kms will be shortened and especially from Garo Hills. (It) will be shortened like anything and this will be the bridge through which all traffic originating from the other side towards Guwahati will be utilized by this bridge only,” he stated while adding “There will be lots of economic activities. So far, the exit is towards the northern side of the state’s border and this will be the only exit towards the western side. So this will shorten the length, the logistic support and transportation of goods will all be easier for the state.”

According to him, the target is to complete the bridge by 2028.

“However, from the Meghalaya side, work started one year after the Dhubri side, where they have started one year before and there the fitting of the slab has been completed for almost 34 to 35 pillars. There will be two separate two lanes which will go and join and four lanes will continue and again before ending it will again be separated,” he added.
