Tura, Oct 7: The casualties in the Garo Hills keeps increasing, with the death toll increasing to 17 after two more children fell victim to the heavy rain induced deluge in the region.
The last incident comes from North Garo Hills district where two children, identified as 8-year-old Silarin R Marak and 3-year-old Tangme R Marak, fell into a pit filled with rain water in Bete Apal- Bangsi Apal village and drowned on Saturday.
They were reportedly playing outside their house when they slipped into a pit that had been constructed for a toilet.
Heavy rains not only filled the pit but also made it difficult to spot it, leading to the kids falling into it.
With this incident, deaths have been reported from 4 of the 5 districts in Garo Hills. East Garo Hills – 3 deaths, West Garo Hills – 5 deaths, South Garo Hills – 7 deaths, and now North Garo Hills – 2 deaths; total tally standing at 17 deaths.
