Agartala, Apr 2: At least two people died and 800 houses damaged due to sudden nor’westers wind (Kalboishakhi) on Sunday which hit Tripura and other Northeastern States.

Talking to reporters on Monday evening, Brijesh Pandey, Secretary of Revenue, Disaster Management and Relief said, “At least 800 houses were damaged in the recent nor’western wind which brought thunderstorm and lightning. Among these houses, 62 were completely destroyed, 161 suffered severe damage, and 577 were partially damaged,”.

“Blockades were reported in 42 locations due to the felling of trees, electric poles, and transmission lines. Two individuals lost their lives in Gomati district, with one confirmed case of death due to a lightning strike, while investigations are on for the second casualty. Power supplies were disrupted in 205 areas, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents,” informed Pandey.

He said, “We have taken prompt response and relief measures, in line with the election model code of conduct, were swiftly implemented to assist those affected by the nor’westers. All blockades caused by fallen trees and electric poles were cleared”.

“District disaster management authorities have been proactive in mitigating the impact of the calamity, with quick response teams deployed to clear debris, restore power lines, and assess damages. As an immediate relief, Rs. 4-5 thousand per family has been provided to 50 affected families, while 23 individuals from seven families are currently housed at a relief camp in Teliamura, Khowai district,” he said.

Meanwhile, the state disaster management authorities have earmarked Rs. 55.38 crores for relief efforts, with compensation packages outlined for the affected families and damaged properties.

Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in sensitive areas.
