Guwahati, April 30: In a significant political development, at least 21 members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Manipur have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to reinstate a “popular” government in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025.
“The people of Manipur welcomed the imposition of President’s Rule with hope and expectations. However, it has been nearly three months, and no visible steps have been taken to restore peace and normalcy in the state,” the letter signed by the MLAs stated.
The signatories include legislators from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other parties, largely representing the Meitei-majority valley region and the Naga community. Notably, the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs—who have previously called for a separate administration for Kuki-Zo dominated areas—did not sign the letter. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has also refrained from endorsing the appeal.
The MLAs expressed concern that the continuing political vacuum could further destabilise the state. “Many civil society organisations have come out openly against the imposition of President’s Rule. They are demanding the installation of a popular government and are holding rallies and public meetings, blaming ruling MLAs for failing to act,” the letter noted.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the legislators wrote: “We feel that the installation of a popular government is the only means to bring peace and normalcy in Manipur. We therefore request you to take the necessary steps at the earliest in the interest of the people of Manipur.”
The letter, dated April 10, was received by the Prime Minister’s Office only yesterday, according to sources.
