24 file nomination for by-poll to 5 assembly seats, 38 in the fray

GUWAHATI, October 25: A total of 24 candidates filed nominations on the last day for the by-elections to five assembly constituencies in Assam, bringing the total to 38 candidates as of Friday.

The nominations filed on Friday include three candidates from No. 11 Dholai, one from No. 31 Sidli, five from No. 32 Bongaigaon, three from No. 77 Behali, and twelve from No. 88 Samaguri.

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming by-elections in Assam is scheduled for October 28, with October 30 as the last date for candidates to withdraw. Voting will take place on November 13, followed by the counting of votes on November 18.

BJP candidate Diganta Ghatowar submitted his nomination on October 23 before the returning officer at Biswanath Chariali, accompanied by Assam BJP President Bhavesh Kalita, cabinet ministers Pijush Hazarika and Sanjay Kishan, MP Ranjit Dutta, and a large gathering of BJP supporters.

On Friday, Congress candidate Jayanta Borah filed his nomination, joined by MP Gaurav Gogoi.

AAP candidate Ananta Gogoi also filed his nomination, accompanied by AAP Assam in-charge Rajesh Sharma, state vice president Anurupa Deka Raja, Saumik Sengupta, and general secretary (admin) Rajiv Saikia.

CPI-ML candidate Lakhmi Kanta Kurmi filed his nomination representing the Asom Sanmilito Mancha (ASOM), with support from Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and other senior ASOM leaders.

Two candidates filed for the Samaguri constituency on Friday. BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma submitted his nomination before the returning officer in Nagaon, accompanied by Pradesh BJP President Bhavesh Kalita, cabinet ministers Pijush Hazarika and Keshab Mahanta, along with BJP and AGP supporters.

AAP candidate Nurul Amin Choudhury also filed his nomination for Samaguri, joined by AAP state president Manoj Dhanowar, vice president Mamun Imdadul Haque Choudhury, general secretary Punam Gogoi, and senior party leaders. They led a procession from Nehrubali Stadium to the DC office for the filing.

In Sidli (ST) constituency, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate Suddho Kumar Basumatary submitted his nomination before the returning officer at Kajalgaon. He was accompanied by notable figures, including former BTC chief and BPF president Hagrama Mohilary, former minister Pramila Rani Brahma, BPF Women’s Wing president Supriya Rani Brahma, and MCLA James Basumatary.

Five candidates filed their papers for the Bongaigaon constituency. With this, a total of eight candidates filed their papers for the by poll.

They are: AGP candidate Deeptimoyee Choudhury, Congress candidate Brajenjit Sinha, SUCI Mritunjan Rabha, Independent candidates- Sailendra Sarkar, Deepak Das, Anup Kumar Karmakar, Bhadreswar Barman, Gautam Rai.
