2nd phase of Assam – Meghalaya border talks: Regional Committee for Ri Bhoi holds first meeting

Nongpoh, Dec 1: The first meeting of the Regional Committee for Ri Bhoi District headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong as the Chairperson was held on Wednesday at the Conference Hall of DC’s Office, Nongpoh.

The meeting was attended by the members of the Regional Committee: Dasakhiat Lamare, MLA of Mawhati and Minister in charge of Fishery; Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh Constituency; Sosthenes Sohtun, MLA of Jirang Constituency; Jambor War, EM,KHADC; Victor Rani, MDC of Jirang; Rangkynsai Kharbuki, MDC of Umroi; Arpit Upadhayay Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District; Giri Prasad, Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi District; H. Wahlang, Syiem of Hima Jirang; Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, Syiem of Hima Khyriem; N.Thangkhiew, Basan Nongkseh of Hima Mylliem; M.B Tongper, ADC; and Syiem Raids, Headmen and other village elders.

In the meeting, the committee discussed on the disputed border areas of Ri Bhoi District along with the stakeholders. Also, the Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Khyriem, Syiem Raid Nongtung and others stakeholders handed over the land documents with regards to their respective claims to the Deputy Chief Minister for verification.

Deputy CM Tynsong said the motive of the meeting is to discuss on the disputed border areas of Ri Bhoi District which are under difference with the Assam in the presence of the cabinet minister, MLAs, MDCs, KHADC and traditional heads and to pay attention to the views and suggestion of the stakeholders. He also expected them to provide with more valuable input like land documents to the government for verification before conducting a joint meeting and a joint inspection with the Assam government.

He informed that areas of difference under Ri Bhoi District include Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah and Block II. He said the committee had discussed only two areas out of four – Deshdoomreah and Block II, the other remaining areas will be discussed later.

Tynsong also called upon the traditional heads of these four areas of difference to come forward and submit their land documents, if any, with regards to their claims over the land falling under these areas of difference and be free to have a talk with the government so as to enable it to speed up the work and clear the hurdles.
