38th National Games: Meghalaya’s medal count goes up to 5

Shillong, Feb 6: Meghalaya wins more medals at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, taking the total medal count to five. Indra Sharma, a 15-year-old athlete from Ri-Bhoi, won the silver medal in the Men’s Slalom C1 Event yesterday, competing against athletes with significantly more experience in the sport.

Kiran Devi & B. Anandhi, two riflewomen from the Assam Rifles Rowing node, won the bronze medal in the lightweight women’s double sculls. Today, two more medals were won by athletes in Kayaking and Canoeing.

Elizabeth Vincent won a silver medal in the women’s kayak cross extreme slalom event, and Vikash Rana won the State’s first gold medal in Uttarakhand, outpacing all his competitors in the men’s kayak cross extreme slalom event. Vikash is a 23 year old athlete who has been training in the sport for over four years. A strong athlete, he has developed his skills by training with the association and volunteering time when organising the various events held by the association.

Elizabeth Vincent, 26 years old, has already won many accolades in the sport, including two bronze medals at the Asian Canoe Championships in 2024. She is a regular part of the Indian team and has competed in multiple international competitions. The Meghalaya Canoe Association has stood out during these Games, where all four participants that qualified for their events have won medals.

The success of the association is a strong example of a successful collaboration of athletes, administrators, and the support of the Department, which the State looks to emulate across sports. The State has now equalled its highest National Games medal tally, equalling the five medals won in the 2007 National Games in Assam. As announced by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Meghalaya, the State shall also release mechanisms based on the Sports Policy of the State to offer Government jobs to the successful athletes from the Games. With the success of our athletes, and the streamlining of Department strategies, the vision of establishing Meghalaya as a regional sporting powerhouse is being realised.
