Shillong, Aug 17: The District and Session Court, East Khasi Hills, on Thursday granted eight days of police custody to five arrested claiming to be members of the new Khasi militant outfit ‘National Liberation Council of Nongkyndong (NLCN)’.
The State Police has made 11 arrests so far for having connection with the new militant outfit. Five were produced before the District and Session Court on Thursday afternoon, whereas, another four members of the NLCN will be produced before the court on Friday, August 18.
Amongst the 11 arrested, one is a pregnant woman and one is a juvenile. The woman is believed to be the main recruiter and record keeper. She is currently undergoing treatment at Ganesh Das Hospital, Shillong as she is 3-months pregnant. While, the juvenile, who claimed himself to be the self-styled Chairman of the outfit, has been taken to juvenile home.
Police suspect the juvenile, a class X student, is related to HNLC leader Sainkupar Nongtraw.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Thursday clarified that no new terrorist outfit has been formed in the State. Instead, the 11 individuals arrested have self-proclaimed themselves as members of the National Liberation Council of Nongkyndong.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the situation is under control, and the government remains on high alert.
