Dharmanagar, Aug 17: A significant anti-narcotics operation unfolded at the Assam-Tripura border when Karimgang district police in Assam thwarted an attempt to smuggle a massive haul of cannabis valued at approximately Rs 3 crore.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday at the Churaibari checkpoint, where vigilant officers managed to intercept a speeding vehicle trying to breach the state border from Tripura.
The vehicle’s audacious attempt to evade authorities ended in disaster as it overturned due to a loss of control, allowing the driver to escape the scene.
Pratap Das, a senior officer of the Assam Police, detailed the operation, stating, “A total of 594 kg of cannabis, packaged in 58 parcels, was confiscated from a halted truck with license plate number TR-01-AC-1686 at the Churaibari police watch post along the Assam-Tripura border. The estimated street value of the seized cannabis is an astonishing Rs 3 crore. It appears highly likely that the contraband was destined for smuggling out of India. Despite the driver managing to evade capture, our investigative efforts persist as we strive to bring him to justice.”
Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, also shared the information on social media.
