Imphal, Aug 17: Following heavy rains and landslides, 500 trucks were stranded along the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway-37 in Manipur on Thursday.
According to reports, due to the continuous downpour, a few portions of the vital road link have been blocked.
“The landslides occurred between Irang and Awangkhul – 2, Khongsang and Awangkhul, and Rangkhui village on Wednesday in mountainous Noney district, blocking the NH-37, leaving around 500 goods laden trucks and empty ones stranded,” said an official.
Due to the blockade of the highway, carrying of food grains and essential items is likely to be affected in the ethnic violence devastated Manipur.
Meanwhile, district administration has engaged a large number of workers to clear the mudslides from the highway.
On June 30 last year, a devastating landslide massively damaged an under construction railway infrastructure of the Jiribam-Imphal new railway line in the Noney district, killing at least 61 people, majority of them Territorial Army jawans.
“We have engaged workers and taken help of other departments to clear the roads. As many as 500 trucks carrying essential commodities are stranded in Jiribam-Imphal road,” said an official of district administration.
For past several days, incessant rain triggered landslides has become a headache for the people of the state. “We are facing immense problems because we are stranded here for last 24 hours. We are having shortage of food and water,” said a truck driver.
