AASU backs statewide protest against alleged fake encounters in Assam

Must read

Guwahati, July 18: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has thrown its weight behind the student-led campaign against alleged fake police encounters in Assam, extending support to the statewide black badge protest scheduled for July 19.

In a statement, AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Srismita Phukan said the organisation stood in solidarity with the democratic movement seeking justice and accountability over the alleged extra-judicial killings in the state.

The student body asserted that questioning alleged fake encounters was neither anti-national nor anti-police, but a legitimate democratic exercise aimed at upholding the rule of law and ensuring transparency.

Expressing concern over what it described as a growing pattern of alleged extra-judicial killings, AASU said every citizen is entitled to legal protection and due process under the Constitution.

The organisation urged the state government to engage with the concerns through dialogue instead of confrontation, stressing that discussion and dissent are integral to a healthy democracy.

AASU also appealed to students, youth and the general public to participate peacefully in Sunday’s black badge protest while maintaining law and order.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, the student organisation said it would continue to stand for justice, constitutional rights and the protection of civil liberties in Assam.
