Guwahati, July 19: The Assam government has placed the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force on standby as the flood situation worsens in the Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, raising the possibility of large-scale evacuation and rescue operations.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the state government is closely monitoring the evolving situation and has taken precautionary measures to ensure swift response if conditions deteriorate further.
As the flood situation in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat continues to worsen, Govt of Assam has requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to be on standby to support evacuation and rescue operations, if required.

The Chief Minister said the Army and Air Force have been requested to remain ready for deployment should rescue and evacuation operations become necessary in the flood-hit areas.
In a bid to strengthen the government’s response on the ground, Sarma directed Cabinet ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Sushanta Borgohain to immediately visit the affected districts, oversee relief and rescue operations, and ensure timely assistance reaches every affected family.
“The safety and well-being of our people remain our highest priority,” the Chief Minister said, adding that he is monitoring the flood situation round the clock and that the government will take every necessary step to protect lives and provide relief.
The latest move comes as continuous rainfall has aggravated the flood situation across parts of Upper Assam, prompting authorities to intensify preparedness for any further escalation.
