Kohima, July 18: A 19-year-old tourist from Assam was rescued after falling nearly 100 feet into a steep gorge along the Dzukou trekking route near Khiyokesa in Nagaland’s Viswema village, with local tour guides and youth volunteers braving rain and treacherous terrain to bring him to safety.
The tourist, identified as Hisahetuk Das of Guwahati, reportedly slipped off the footpath at around 3 pm on Friday while trekking in the area.
Despite heavy rain, steep cliffs and dense dwarf bamboo vegetation, trained members of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, assisted by volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation, carried out the rescue operation and safely evacuated the injured tourist.

According to the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO), the rescue was coordinated by its vice-president and chairman of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, Virato Naleo, whose prompt response ensured the tourist was brought to safety.
An ambulance from the Community Health Centre, Viswema, transported the injured tourist to the Naga Hospital Authority, Kohima, where he is undergoing treatment.
In a statement, SAYO president Zasitsolie Beio commended the rescuers for risking their own safety in difficult weather conditions and challenging terrain, describing their efforts as an example of selfless community service.
The organisation also said the swift rescue left the tourist’s companions deeply impressed, highlighting the preparedness and dedication of local volunteers and tour guides who frequently respond to emergencies along Nagaland’s popular trekking routes.
