Meghalaya singer Kitkupar Nongsiej storms into WCOPA semi-finals in Las Vegas

Shillong, July 18: Meghalaya’s young singing sensation Kitkupar Nongsiej has advanced to the semi-finals of the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2026 in Las Vegas, USA, marking another major milestone for the state’s growing presence on the international performing arts stage.

Representing India at the prestigious competition, often described as the “Olympics of Performing Arts,” Kitkupar secured his place in the semi-finals after impressing an international panel of judges during the preliminary rounds.

Hailing from Kynshi village in Eastern West Khasi Hills district, Kitkupar has emerged as one of Meghalaya’s most promising young vocalists. He shot to prominence after winning Ka Sur Kynud Season 3, the state’s premier singing competition organised by the Don Bosco Media Network (DBMN). He had earlier won Sur Kynud Niam Season 2 and later became associated with the internationally acclaimed Shillong Chamber Choir.

Known for his renditions of traditional Khasi folk music, Kitkupar has also featured on Doordarshan Meghalaya, earning praise for promoting the state’s rich musical heritage.
He qualified for Team India after clearing a competitive international online audition for WCOPA, which brings together singers, dancers, actors and musicians from more than 60 countries.

His achievement continues a growing legacy for Meghalaya on the global stage. Earlier, Chevinia Lyngdoh Mawnai, winner of the inaugural Ka Sur Kynud, represented India at the UK Vocal Star competition and emerged as the international champion.

Ahead of his departure for the United States, the Don Bosco Youth Centre and Don Bosco Media Network organised a special prayer service and send-off ceremony, where church leaders, family members and well-wishers wished him success.

With Kitkupar now among the competition’s top performers, hopes are high in Meghalaya that the young singer will carry India’s colours even further in one of the world’s most prestigious performing arts championships.
