Guwahati, July 18: Guwahati Police on Saturday detained two youths for allegedly painting a portrait of activist Sonam Wangchuk on a public wall without prior permission, even as authorities registered two separate cases over unauthorised wall art in different parts of the city.
The two youths—Nakul Mili of Dibrugarh and Gaurav Singha of Dakhingaon—were apprehended by a police patrol near the Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium under Dispur Police Station limits while they were painting the mural.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Hiranya Kumar Barman said the duo was caught in the act of defacing a public wall and a case had been registered against them.
“Our patrolling team found them painting on a wall near the Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium. They were apprehended on the spot and are currently in police custody,” Barman told reporters.
He said the police had registered Dispur Police Station Case No. 524/26 and added that the youths would be released after completion of the required legal formalities.
Police said the portrait was painted in support of Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi.
Barman said unauthorised wall paintings had become an increasing trend in the city and warned that strict action would be taken against those defacing public property without official approval.
He also disclosed that a separate case had been registered at Basistha Police Station over another portrait of Wangchuk painted without permission. Police said efforts were underway to identify those involved.
The action comes amid heightened scrutiny of unauthorised graffiti and murals in Guwahati, with police reiterating that prior permission is mandatory for any artwork on public property.
