TURA, Aug 29: Having announced a separate recruitment drive for Garo nursing candidates to fill up 21 posts of Mid- Level Health Provider in health and wellness sub-centres after they missed out on a previous employment drive, the Meghalaya health department is planning to provide a six month long course of the same for the selected candidates who do not possess the required norms.
The previous drive which centered on B.Sc nursing with a certificate on Community Health had been conducted through a campus recruitment from the only two nursing colleges at NEIGRIHMS and Woodland hospital in Shillong in which garo aspirants missed out.
While the new recruitment drive in Tura will take place on 4th September at Working women Hostel, there is concern many of the applicants may not have the required Certificate in Community Health since that course was closed down by the lone provider IGNOU in Tura from 2019 onwards.
There are no B.Sc nursing colleges in any part of the Garo Hills with only GNM nursing in existence operating from three separate hospitals in Tura.
To make the situation more complex, a majority of B.Sc selected nursing candidates from Garo Hills are allotted institutions outside the state where the said CCH course is not usually provided.
“We are aware of the problems faced by the nursing aspirants from Garo Hills which is why we are planning to have a special drive to provide the 6 months certificate in Community Health training primarily for the nursing students from Garo Hills,” assured senior most health official in the state and Principal Secretary for Health P Sampath Kumar while speaking to HUB NEWS on Monday.
On a separate note, the National Health Mission, which conducted the controversial Shillong recruitment and has now opened a second recruitment front for Garo Hills, issued a clarification and stated that there are still around 50 vacancies in the Garo Hills region for the MLHP (CCH).
