Shillong, Jan 8: Work for the erection of barbed wire fencing along the Indo-Bangla International Border (IB) would be completed soon. A top BSF official informed.

While asserting that the border fencing between Meghalaya and Bangladesh will be complete soon, the Border security force today said 70 of the border have been fenced.

“Out of 448 KM of the border with Bangladesh we have already 70 percent border is fenced, other areas which are not fenced, the orders are already given to construction agencies and construction is under progress and this will be completed soon,” Inspector General (IG) of the BSF Meghalaya Frontier, Hardeep Singh said.

Even as he hoped the work will soon be completed, he said, “There are few patches where we need some clearance from the Bangladesh Government we have already taken up the case with them and it is in the process and it has actually to be received the clearance very soon.”

Asked about the demand for construction of border fencing from the zero line, he said, “there are issues in some area where people have demanded that the fencing should be at the zero line but fencing it is not possible to lay fencing at the zero line because as per the agreement with the Bangladesh Government you can’t have such infrastructure at Zero line that’s beyond 150 yards near the border so anything coming between International border and 150 yards you needs clearance from the Bangladesh Government.”

“We have taken up with concern Deputy Commissioners and with the Chief Secretary so that the fencing is there wherever the land accusation is pending so I am hopeful that the fencing will be there,” the official said.
