Tura, July 13: The A·chik Literature Society has expressed serious concern over the proposed enactment of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by the Central Government of India. In a statement released on Thursday, the society highlighted the potential adverse effects of the UCC, particularly on tribal communities, with a specific mention of the Garos.
According to the society, the implementation of the UCC would jeopardize the social fabric, customs, traditions, cultural ethos, laws, and beliefs that the tribals, including the Garos, have inherited from their ancestors. These customs and traditions have allowed them to coexist peacefully and harmoniously with other communities.
It is important to note that the tribals are protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, which grants them certain safeguards and autonomy. The A·chik Literature Society strongly advocated for upholding this constitutional protection for the tribal communities.
The Garo society, in particular, follows a matrilineal and matrilocal system, where lineage is traced through the mother’s family, and children take their mother’s surname. The society also practices unique traditions, including a distinct land-holding system.
The A·chik Literature Society firmly believes that the enactment of the UCC is both unnecessary and undesirable. They have appealed to the authorities not to proceed with the UCC, as its implementation would have a detrimental impact on all the communities that form the diverse fabric of India, especially the tribal communities and the Garos.
The society’s concerns shed light on the need to preserve the rich cultural heritage and traditions of indigenous communities, ensuring their continued existence and the protection of their rights.
