“A People’s House”: Raj Bhavan opens for Independence Day celebrations

Must read

Shillong, Aug 14: For some it was a moment of pride while others admired the architecture and serene beauty of the decades-old Raj Bhavan.

The storied halls of Raj Bhavan, Meghalaya—steeped in tradition, culture, and public service—have once again opened their doors to the public in the run-up to Independence Day. For two days, beginning Thursday, visitors have been welcomed into the 150-year-old Governor’s House, which stands as both a heritage landmark and a symbol of the state’s rich history.

The Raj Bhavan building which completed 120 years in October 2023 is one of the few heritage buildings left in the State now.

The sprawling grounds came alive with music, lights, and an exhibition-cum-sale showcasing the work of various cooperative societies. Draped in the Indian Tricolour, the Raj Bhavan exuded a festive charm as people from near and far strolled through its manicured lawns and historic corridors.

Speaking to Hub News, Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari, Commissioner & Secretary to the Governor, noted that the initiative was part of the Governor’s vision to make Raj Bhavan “the people’s house.” “The doors are open for all—from Meghalaya and beyond,” he said, highlighting the ongoing cooperative exhibition and tomorrow’s much-anticipated public event, featuring a two-and-a-half-hour patriotic performance by the Assam Rifles Symphony Band, alongside cultural presentations.

For many, it was a first glimpse inside the iconic residence. Sarita Sharma, a school teacher from Shillong, described the visit as a moment of pride. “Independence Day reminds us of the struggles of our freedom fighters. Today, we live in the freedom they fought for,” she said, adding that her students were equally thrilled to explore the venue.

Visitors also came from afar. A tourist from Rajasthan expressed joy at experiencing the celebrations in such a historic setting, extending warm wishes to every citizen of India on the occasion.

Among the younger attendees, college student Nessa Dhar reflected on the deeper meaning of freedom. “It’s about being able to express yourself without fear—to be open and truly yourself,” she said, while admiring the architecture and serene beauty of the decades-old estate.

With its gates flung wide and its history on full display, Raj Bhavan’s pre-Independence Day opening offered not only a visual feast but also a moment to reflect on the spirit of freedom—both hard-won and deeply cherished.
