Johannesburg, Aug 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a rare and exquisite piece of Indian artwork to the eminent leaders in Johannesburg during the much-anticipated 15th BRICS Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a three-day visit to South Africa to attend the 15th BRICS summit. He also gifted special presents to the organisation’s leaders, including South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, the first lady of South Africa, Tshepo Motsepe, and Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The gifts were also special because they also had a touch of Northeast India, representing the diverse artistic traditions of the country.
PM Modi gifted a Nagaland shawl to the first lady of South Africa, Tshepo Motsepe. This shawl represents rich, vibrant colours and designs, as well as the use of traditional weaving techniques.
These shawls are made using materials like silk, cotton, and wool. The shawls also have interesting symbolic shapes that are inspired by the myths, legends, and beliefs of the Naga tribes.
According to the people of the Naga tribe, the colours of the showls have different meanings. For example, red is a symbol of courage, while black represents mourning.
It must also be noted that this gesture of the Prime Minister highlighted India’s commitment to promoting its cultural heritage and also fostered stronger diplomatic ties with the leaders of the BRICS nations.
PM Modi also gifted a Bidri pair of Surahi from Telangana to the South African President and a Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh to the Brazilian President.
