Shillong, June 08: Deputy Chief Minister Incharge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar, announced that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) will be conducting a second survey of Umroi Airport to assess the feasibility of expanding the runway. This initiative aims to determine if the airport can accommodate wider-bodied aircraft.
The ongoing feasibility exercise is expected to yield results within the next three months. Commissioner and Secretary of the Transport Department, Sanjay Goyal, confirmed that the survey work has already commenced, and preliminary findings are anticipated in the specified timeframe.
Currently, Umroi Airport, which serves Shillong, is limited to handling smaller turboprop aircraft due to its short runway, which restricts jet plane operations. The feasibility study will explore potential runway expansion possibilities to facilitate the operation of larger aircraft.
