Dibrugarh, Jan 17: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a protest in front of the Lezai-Kalakhowa Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital in Dibrugarh on Friday, demanding the restoration of emergency services that have been shut down at the facility.
Protesters raised slogans against the government for its failure to provide basic emergency healthcare. One protester highlighted that although Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) is just 25 kilometres away, 58 villages rely on this local hospital, which has been unable to offer essential medical services. “The hospital has an anti-venom unit, but it is not functional,” said the protester.
Concerns were also raised about the lack of key medical facilities at the hospital. “There is no operation theatre here, and the hospital is severely understaffed, with no doctors available during the night shift. Gynaecologists are also not available,” another protester added.
A third protester emphasized the struggles faced by local villagers. “The hospital was meant to serve the people of this area, but without emergency services, how can the poor villagers get treatment when it’s most needed? AMCH is far, and if someone needs urgent care, how can they get it if doctors and staff are unavailable?”
Women protesters joined the call for immediate action, demanding that the Assam Chief Minister and Health Minister restore essential healthcare facilities to the hospital.
