Tura, Aug 23: Expressing deep concern, the A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has appealed to the authorities to release the pending salaries of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) employees.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of GHADC, the NGO said, “We are writing to express our deep concern regarding the prolonged delay in the disbursement of salaries to the employees of the GHADC.”
ACHIK said the non-payment of salaries over the past months by the GHADC to its employees has placed an “undue burden on their families”. The organisation said many employees are facing “distress and severe financial hardships”.
“The lack of a stable income has made it extremely difficult for them to meet their basic needs, such as food, education for their children, healthcare, and housing,” ACHIK said in its memorandum.
It further added that the GHADC owes “moral and legal obligation” to ensure that its employees are compensated timely for their services. ACHIK said timely payment of salaries will help employees regain their financial stability and help reduce their stress.
Stating that a well-compensated workforce is more motivated and productive, the organisation said release of salaries will “reinvigorate the employees’ commitment to their duties and responsibilities” and restore “trust in leadership”.
The organisation recommended to the GHADC chief that the council should establish a dedicated reserve fund for salaries. The council should regularly monitor its financial stability, and ensure “transparency and communicate clearly” on such issues of delay in salary disbursement.
Lastly, ACHIK recommended that representatives from the employees must be taken into confidence to address concerns.
