Tura, Oct 21: The A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has “strongly condemned the brutal act on two Garo families in Bangladesh” and demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice without delay.
In a letter to the Deputy High Commission for the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Kolkata, ACHIK said that on behalf of the global Garo community it expresses “deep concern and dismay” over the attack on two Garo families on October 15, 2024 in Bangladesh.
The victims were Bisso Mree, Eva Mree, and Stanton Mree and they were attacked in Babelakona, Bangladesh. “The heinous nature of this assault has not only shocked the Garo people but also raised significant concerns about their safety and well-being in Bangladesh,” ACHIK said in its letter.
The organisation based in Garo Hills said that the Garos are one of the indigenous communities in Bangladesh and have long contributed to the nation’s cultural and social fabric.
“Such attacks are not only a violation of basic human rights but also an assault on the dignity and existence of the Garo people and we strongly condemn this brutal act and demand that the perpetrators be brought to justice without delay,” ACHIK said to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner.
It demanded that the interim government of Bangladesh should institute an impartial investigation to ensure accountability and to prevent future occurrences of such violent attacks against the Garo community.
“We also urge the Government of Bangladesh to take proactive steps to protect its indigenous communities, including the Garo, from violence, discrimination, and marginalization,” the organisation added.
