Tura, Jan 24: The A•Chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has raised serious concerns over the appalling state of the Purakhasia Public Health Center (PHC) in Tura, calling for urgent intervention from authorities.
In a letter addressed to the District Medical and Health Officer of West Garo Hills, ACHIK painted a grim picture of the PHC’s deteriorating infrastructure. The organization noted that the hospital and staff quarters are severely outdated, poorly maintained, and lack basic facilities, including boundary walls.

“Visible structural damages, including collapsing approach roads, leaky ceilings, and water seepage in all wards, pose a serious risk to the health, safety, and comfort of patients,” ACHIK stated. It further highlighted that no significant repairs have been undertaken in the past decade, leaving the buildings in dire need of urgent restoration.
ACHIK also expressed alarm over the acute shortage of doctors and nurses at the PHC. “With a population of 28,818 spread across 82 villages, the PHC is managed by only one medical officer who handles OPD, emergencies, and administrative duties,” the letter read. This situation forces patients to endure long waits for treatment, jeopardizing the quality of care and endangering lives.

The organization revealed that patients frequently face a lack of essential medicines, compelling them to buy expensive alternatives from private pharmacies. This places a heavy financial burden on already struggling families.
Adding to the grievances, ACHIK pointed out that the PHC lacks access to potable drinking water, as there is no proper supply from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department.
