Dibrugarh, March 25: The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the apex body of tea garden workers in Assam, has decided to launch a protest program across the state from the first week of April, demanding a wage hike for tea garden workers.
Addressing a press conference at the ACMS Central Office here, ACMS president Paban Singh Ghatowar said, “From the first week of April, we will launch a protest program across the state, demanding a daily minimum wage hike to ₹351 for tea garden workers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that there was no demand for a minimum wage from tea garden workers, which is not true.”
“We have already submitted several memorandums to tea garden owners and the state government, urging them to increase the minimum wage to ₹351. The government should understand that the interim wage increase is not permanent,” Ghatowar stated.
He added, “We are also pressing for our 11-point charter of demands. The state government has decided to allow five per cent of the total land of tea estates to be used for tourism promotion and other purposes. If the land is utilized for building hospitals and schools, we have no objections. However, priority for jobs should be given to the children of tea garden workers.”
“If hospitals are built on tea garden land, tea garden workers should be provided free treatment or concessional healthcare,” Ghatowar said.
The Union firmly believes that this wage increase is crucial to uplifting workers’ living standards and securing them a dignified livelihood.
