Shillong, April 10: Suspended Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, has announced that he is one of the very few legislators who have decided not to go for Aadhaar enrolment.

Joining an anti-Aadhaar protest staged by the Awaken India Movement (AIM) here on Wednesday, Nongrum said, “We are not against Aadhaar enrolment but we urge the state and centre government that they should not force people to go for Aadhaar enrolment.”

He said the government should be reminded that they cannot deprive people of their rights to access various benefits adding “anybody attempting to do this will have to take full responsibility for their action.”

Nongrum also slammed political leaders over the problem arising out of the issue and said, “If Aadhaar is made mandatory then you should also come up with a law that says without Aadhaar you cannot vote.”

He urged the people to go to their respective MDCs, MLAs, MP and said, “Don’t let them sleep, they should speak against this attitude to force use of Aadhaar.”

Recalling his 17-day fasting against the attempt to take away the powers of traditional heads/institutions in 2015, Nongrum said he had to go through a lot of stigma and discrimination but finally, his fasting did not go to waste because the powers of the traditional headmen/institutions have been restored and this would not have happened without the support of the people.
