Guwahati, Mar 29: The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in selected districts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland for an additional six months, starting from April 1.
This decision comes after a comprehensive review of the law and order situation in the regions. In Arunachal Pradesh, the AFSPA will remain enforced in Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts, as well as in specific areas falling under the jurisdiction of Namsai, Mahadevpur, and Chowkham police stations. These areas, situated along the Assam border, have been declared as ‘disturbed areas’.
In Nagaland, AFSPA will continue to be in effect in Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts.
The law grants extensive powers to armed forces personnel deployed in these regions, empowering them to conduct search operations, make arrests, and use force as deemed necessary for maintaining public order.
