Tura, Nov 5: After the Centre cut the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively, effective on November 4, which helped to bring down their costs across the country, the A’Chik Holistic Awakening Movement’ (AHAM) feels that the Meghalaya government should reduce the prices further at the state level to provide additional relief to the people.
In a press statement on Friday, AHAM vice president George Prince Cheran Momin urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to reduce the fuel prices further, including that of LPG cylinders, to bring relief to the citizens of the state.
Reacting to the Conrad’s statement that the government is not in a position to reduce the fuel prices due to reduction of revenue generation of the state, Momin pointed out that the Centre has already put the onus on state governments for further reduction in prices as Centre’s move has already brought the price of petrol to under Rs. 100 per litre mark, atleast in Meghalaya.
In case the state government fails to do so, AHAM has threatened to organize agitations and public rallies and meetings against the fuel price hike, adding that the poster campaign has already started in various parts of Garo Hills.
