Aizawl, March 12: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has raised alarm over reports that Western mercenaries, including former fighters from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, are entering Myanmar through Mizoram to train rebel forces battling against the military regime in the neighbouring country.

Speaking openly to the 40-member Assembly, Lalduhoma said, “We have specific intelligence that Ukraine war veterans have travelled to Myanmar’s Chin State via Mizoram to train rebel outfits fighting the military junta.”
Warning that the international conflict could be spilling over into India’s northeastern border, he also noted the sudden rise in the number of foreign visitors, including those from the U.K. and the U.S., to the State.

He shared that around 2,000 Westerns visited the State between June and December 2024, “yet we hardly see foreign tourists on the streets of Aizawl”.
He pointed specifically to the arrest of British citizen Daniel Newey at Lengpui Airport on June 19, 2024, who was caught with live ammunition.

Mizoram shares a sensitive 510-kilometer border with Myanmar, a region that has been tense since the military coup. Thousands of people fleeing from Myanmar have taken refuge in Mizoram as refugees.
