Khasi resistance and 'Vande Mataram' to come alive on Shillong stage

Shillong, July 13: The story of the Khasi people’s resistance against British colonial rule and their quest to preserve their identity will take centre stage in Shillong on July 15 when the Sangeet Natak Akademi, in collaboration with the Riti Academy of Visual Arts, presents Rikynti Ka Rilum Khasi (Virasat – The Eternal Hills).

The full-length theatrical production, to be staged at Jaiaw Shyiap Lumpyllon Hall from 6 pm, commemorates the spirit of the national song “Vande Mataram” while celebrating the history, culture and resilience of the Khasi people.

Directed by Phrangsngi Wahlang and written by noted scholar Raphael Warjri, the play blends history, folklore, music, dance and the traditional Khasi Phawar—an oral poetic form—to narrate defining moments in Meghalaya’s past.

The production traces the Khasi struggle across generations, from the Anglo-Khasi War led by U Tirot Sing Syiem and the warriors of Hima Khatsawphra against British forces to the Hill State Movement and the constitutional efforts of the Federation of Khasi States to safeguard indigenous identity and self-governance.

Presented through conversations between a grandfather and his granddaughter, the play links historical events with contemporary aspirations, encouraging younger audiences to reconnect with Meghalaya’s history and cultural heritage.

One of the dramatic highlights revisits the 1829 attack at Nongkhlaw—described in British records as the Nongkhlaw Massacre but remembered in Khasi history as a defining act of resistance against colonial rule.

The production is interwoven with patriotic songs, traditional Khasi music, dance sequences and dramatic choreography, creating an immersive theatrical experience that honours both India’s freedom movement and the contribution of the Khasi people to the nation’s history.

Organisers said the production seeks to celebrate the ideals of courage, sacrifice and cultural resilience while inspiring audiences, particularly the youth, to preserve the rich traditions and historical legacy of the Khasi Hills.

The performance is part of the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s nationwide programme commemorating the enduring legacy of “Vande Mataram.”
