Flash floods wreak havoc in Arunachal’s Kurung Kumey, ex-ZPC seeks urgent relief

Must read

Itanagar, July 13: Flash floods triggered by overnight torrential rain have caused widespread destruction in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kurung Kumey district, washing away key bridges, severing road links and inundating villages, prompting former Zila Parishad Chairperson (ZPC) Sangha Tajik to urge the state government to launch immediate relief and restoration measures.

Parsi-Parlo circle and Damin subdivision were among the worst-hit after the Kumey River swelled following incessant rainfall early on Monday.

“At around 3 am, flash floods submerged the entire Parsi-Parlo circle and Damin subdivision. Floodwaters entered villages, roads were washed away and connectivity has been severely disrupted,” Tajik said.

Among the major infrastructure losses was the Luksang Valley Bridge, built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which was swept away by the raging waters. The recently inaugurated Hutar Valley Bridge, also constructed by the BRO, was similarly washed away.

In Damin subdivision, the bridge linking Huri and Damin collapsed, cutting off road access, while another bridge connecting Pagam village was destroyed. An inspection bungalow at Parsi-Parlo was inundated, two houses were partially damaged and a church also suffered damage.

Tajik appealed to the Arunachal Pradesh government to provide immediate relief materials to affected families and expedite the restoration of damaged roads and Bailey bridges.

“I appeal to the state government, NGOs and student organisations to come forward and support the flood victims. Restoration work must be taken up on a war footing to reconnect the affected areas,” he said.

The floods also dealt a severe blow to St Thomas School in Parsi-Parlo, with the entire campus going under water. School buildings, classrooms, furniture, teaching materials, equipment and teachers’ quarters were extensively damaged.

Officials said Kurung Kumey, Kamle and Pakke Kessang districts were among the worst affected by flash floods after heavy overnight rainfall caused rivers and streams to overflow, disrupting normal life and damaging public infrastructure.

With several remote villages remaining cut off, authorities are assessing the extent of the damage as efforts are underway to restore connectivity and reach affected communities.
