Must read

Shillong, June 30: The death of two Garo youth from Nagaland in Gurugram has shocked and sparked outrage in the North eastern region, because of the mystery surrounding their demise. Different organizations from the region are demanding thorough investigation of the incident, which looks like an alleged gross medical negligence, and justice for the victims.

Meghalaya based A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has written to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi for providing justice to late Samuel Sangma and late Rosy Sangma, the two victims. It has urged the Government of India to look into the matter seriously and to bring the people involved to book and serve Justice to the bereaved family.

Stating that two innocent souls became prey to racism, AHAM President, Champion R Sangma said, “The series of videos clips that are available clearly indicate foul play and the cries of a helpless brother for justice for his dead sister shows our real society where people became means for their personal benefit and ignored the importance of life.”

He alleged that Samuel Sangma was ‘forever silenced’ because he questioned the negligence by particular doctors and nurses, which resulted in the death of Lt Rosy Sangma.

“The question raised by Lt Samuel Sangma was an alarming one and since it was having weight over the lies, the voice of Samuel Sangma was forever silent,” Sangma said.
AHAM has also extended solidarity to the grieving family on behalf of the Garo Tribe of Meghalaya.

Earlier, the Additional CS & Chief Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House, New Delhi, Jyoti Kalash has also written to the Additional Commissioner of Police, PERS, SPUNER, New Delhi for expeditious investigation into the deaths. He said both the deaths are mysterious in nature, and a video by Samuel’s father narrating the incident by providing reference to a video made by his brother-in-law showing alteration between Samuel and the Hospital staff has gone viral.

He said the Nagaland government has also expressed its anguish over the incident and there is likelihood of unrest in the state and the region.

The incident

One Rosy Sangma died in the ALFAA Hospital, Gurugram, Haryana on June 24, 2021 after consuming ice-cream given to her by hospital staff while she was in ICU. Samuel Sangma, nephew of Rosy, was also found hanging from ceiling at a hotel in Gurugram, where he was staying.

Reportedly, the hospital staff assaulted Samuel when he confronted them for giving ice-cream to his aunt in the ICU, and not allowing him to see her thereafter. Following which he was also found dead in his hotel room.

Both are residents of Dimapur, Nepali Basti in Nagaland.

‘We are clueless’

Talking to Hub News from Dimapur, Samuel’s father, Shekhar Ganguly Marak said they are clueless about the circumstances of their deaths. He said, “We are very much clueless and very much in pain.”

Despite a week into the death, he said they are yet to receive the post mortem report of his son.

He said the case is under investigation even as he hoped for justice.

He also expressed his gratitude to organizations from the region that have come forward in support of his family.

GSU demands arrest of culprits

The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Tura has demanded that the culprits for the deaths must be brought to book and penalized especially the doctor who assaulted the deceased youth and those involved in the actual first degree murder of these youth.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, GSU president, Tengsak G. Momin said, “Several videos and voice recordings as recorded by the deceased have been viral on the social media which clearly shows one doctor assaulting Shri Samuel Sangma and his tormented pleadings for justice for his relative who died due to medical mistreatment.

What must be investigated is whether the ice-cream given to an ICU patient is correct or the icecream has a substance which contributed to Lt. Rosy Sangma’s demise. Another video shows bruises and cuts on his legs which may have been the result of criminal assault. His death could well be a murder case.”

He also requested legislator from Assam, Dr. Numal G. Momin to pursue the case to its logical end and also requested assistance from Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma and the MPs from the State to fight more for justice for its people by raising their voices.
