Bengaluru, May 19: A major mishap was averted last night as an Air India Express flight (IX 1132) bound for Kochi made a full-scale emergency landing shortly after take-off from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) due to an engine fire.
According to reports, flight IX1132 took off from KIA, Bengaluru. All 179 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated after the emergency landing at 11.12 pm at the Bengaluru Airport, assisted by airport ground services. No injuries were reported.
An inquiry has been ordered regarding the incident.
An onboard passenger informed reporters that the flight was scheduled to take off from T2 of Bengaluru airport at 9:45 pm on Saturday but took off at 10:50 pm. After a few minutes of departure, passengers noticed flames in the right engine. Soon, everyone onboard started panicking and screaming. The captain then informed us that the flight would return to Bengaluru, and around 11:12 pm, we safely landed.
A statement from Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) said: “On May 18, 2024, IX 1132 from Bengaluru to Kochi made an emergency landing at Bengaluru airport at 11:12 pm due to a reported fire in one of the engines. A full-scale emergency was declared, and the fire was promptly extinguished upon landing. All 179 passengers and six crew members were successfully evacuated from the aircraft.”
