New Delhi, Dec 18: World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged nations to sustain robust COVID-19 surveillance and maintain open exchange of Genome Sequencing Data amid rising cases of covid19.
WHO also shared a video of Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, Covid-19- technical lead of the global health body. In the video she explains the reasons behind the spike in covid19 cases and also talked about precautions that can be taken.
The advisory by WHO came as when cases of Covid-19 witnessed a sharp spike in some countries, including Singapore. The new covid19 strain has been identified as JN.1, a sublineage of Omicron sub-variant BA.2.86.
Covid sub-variant JN.1 has also been detected in Kerala as part of an ongoing routine surveillance of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
In another video, WHO shared a video of Dr Kerkhove explaining the causes of the recent surge.
The global health body said, “Dr Maria Van Kerkhove talks about the current surge in Covid-19 and JN.1 sub-variant. WHO continues to assess the situation. Follow WHO’s public health advice to keep your families and friends safe during this holiday season.”
“It’s not just Covid-19 that’s circulating; we have influenza, other viruses, and bacteria. In other parts of the world, we are entering the winter months and people are starting to gather for the holiday season. As people gather, they spend more time indoors, especially if there is poor ventilation. These pathogens that spread efficiently between people and through the air will take advantage,” Dr said.
She said Covid19 cases is increasing because the virus is evolving, adding that 68 per cent of the current cases were cases of XBB sublineages and other groupings like JN.1.
