Ampareen asserts need to fight ‘negative force’ working against NPP-led MDA Govt

SHILLONG, MAY 18: Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has asserted that the need to fight the negative forces claiming that the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has done nothing for the people of the state in the last six years.

Lyngdoh told reporters on Friday that she was happy to be the party candidate from the Shillong parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha elections as she has become educated of what has happened and not happening in the state.

Having visited all 36 Assembly segments during her election campaign, the five-time legislator said that she was happy that Meghalaya had progressed substantially.

“Now, we have to fight the negative force which says that government has done anything for the people. This is wrong,” she said.

“Whether winning or losing, I can advise my government now. I am well versed with what needs to get done where. I am very clear where the deficit lies,” she added.

Minister pointed out that the biggest deficit of the incumbent NPP-led MDA government or government in the past is publication of the good works they have done. She said she would be taking a review of the matter with the Directorate of Public Relations (DIPR), which is under her charge as minister.

“We are not doing this (publicizing the government’s good works) aggressively. I will be sitting with the DIPR to ensure we make it mandatory for departments to publicize what they are doing across the board,” she stated.

The minister said that she had tremendous exposure during the MP elections adding “Either ways win or lose, the government will benefit from my candidature. I have been to every nook and corner of Shillong parliamentary seat. I now know what the government has to do. I have gone there in person.”

“If you say that Meghalaya has not progressed then you are seriously joking because I have gone to 36 constituencies – the progress is very clear, we have better roads, we have better health facilities, the employment generation and opportunities across the 36 constituencies is very good and I have seen that housing facilities for people have improved substantially. I have seen that access to health care, access to education is much better than before,” she said.

On the other hand, the minister while refusing to share her assessment on the elections said that “assessments are just efforts put in by political party on whether or not they will win a particular election. If you must have seen soon after the polls, there were great jubilation in one political group, where they were confidently saying that they are winning this election whereas actually MP is not very easy election to assess. If you ask me whether or not we have done an assessment, I will say yes we have done an assessment and whether or not we should share all the assessment details is something which we again say no. There is no point in predicting. Anyways there are laws in this nation today which do not allow any post poll predictions and we are leading this government and we will not share.”

Stating that her hunch is very clear about the election, Lyngdoh said, “I can only talk about hunch. My hunch is very clear; I have offered my candidature to the people of Shillong parliamentary seat. Now, we will wait to see the results whether the Shillong parliamentary seat wants Dr Ampareen or not to be their MP.”

“I have offered and I have said that if you make me your MP I will be working very hard and I am going to be a voice that will be heard but if people reject me, now what you want me to say, I can only say okay I remain MLA then,” she said while adding “But I think it is time that the state of Meghalaya has a voiceful MP. You need somebody who has got the guts to talk, you need somebody who has the ability to prepare themselves to give an opinion on certain issues. Whether or not the people of the state of Meghalaya or especially of Shillong parliamentary seat want me as their MP, we will see when the result comes.”
