Shillong, Dec 8: The challenges faced by women in active politics and the barriers to their participation were the central themes of a discussion between Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh and British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron during the latter’s recent visit to Shillong.
Speaking about the interaction, Lyngdoh said, “We shared conversations on the difficulties of women playing an active role in politics. We exchanged notes, and one common realization was that laws across countries need to be enacted to help women assume political positions.”
Lyngdoh highlighted the personal challenges she has faced as a woman in the political arena, noting that even women in first-world countries encounter similar obstacles. “The conversation gave us insight into the woes that I personally faced as a woman in competition with men, and the difficulties she faces as a woman even in a first-world country,” she shared.
The meeting also touched on employment opportunities for Meghalaya’s youth abroad, especially in countries like England. Lyngdoh emphasized the need to address technical barriers faced by skilled workers from Meghalaya seeking overseas employment.
“A lot of manpower from the state, skilled in various fields, needs to clear examinations required by those countries. Despite the fact that Meghalayans are generally fluent in English, many still struggle to clear these exams, which hinders their chances of securing jobs abroad,” she explained.
The discussion also focused on job prospects in sectors like nursing and hospitality. Lyngdoh stated, “We interacted with her and requested her to look into some of the technical difficulties our applicants are facing. She assured us that she would attend to it, and we are likely to follow it up in New Delhi with another meeting.”
