Shillong, July 18: Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday urged the anti-railway pressure groups of Khasi and Jaintia Hills to visit the Mendipathar railway station in Garo Hills and conduct a comprehensive case study to gauge the impact of the railways on the region.
Refuting claims of any negative consequences arising from the railway project, she emphasized that it has brought significant benefits to the people in the Garo Hills region. In response to the alleged concerns about an influx of outsiders, she stated that she had not heard of any such issues, underscoring that decisions made by the government were not intended to be against the welfare of the people.
On the challenges to the implementation of the railway project in the state, Lyngdoh pointed out the scarcity of low-lying or plateau land, and the abundance of high hills. She highlighted the inconvenient typography that might affect the feasibility of the project in certain areas. However, she stressed that every issue has both positive and negative aspects, and the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the public remains steadfast.
“In any endeavor, there will be challenges to overcome. We must evaluate whether the project is achievable given the circumstances. There will always be mixed reactions from the public whenever the government proposes positive changes. But we govern for the benefit of the people, and we would not go against their wishes,” Lyngdoh asserted.
