Nongpoh, Nov 10: The Ri Bhoi Police District has arrested Baiateilang Lapang, president of the Ri Bhoi Youth Organization (RBYO), for allegedly demanding money from a petrol pump in Byrnihat area.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Ribhoi District, Giri Prasad, confirmed Lapang’s arrest on Thursday afternoon. According to him, Lapang was arrested and interrogated in connection with the alleged demand for money from a petrol pump in Byrnihat.

Lapang faces charges under sections 384/506/34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sources said Lapang was shifted to Shillong after his arrest and a medical check-up at Nongpoh Civil Hospital. He was transferred to Shillong in another case related to extortion in East Khasi Hills.

It should be noted that Lapang is also the chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) protesting against the government’s decision to conclude the Cherry Blossom Festival on a Sunday.
