Aizawl, Jan 19: In a significant development, over 270 Myanmar Army personnel have crossed into Mizoram, India, seeking refuge following intense clashes with Arakan Army rebels within Myanmar. This marks the latest incident in a series of border tensions between Myanmar and India, with the total number of Myanmar Army defections to Mizoram surpassing 600 since November.

A senior state home department official said that Myanmar army personnel entered Mizoram’s Bandukbanga village, located on the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh trijunction, Wednesday afternoon.

Seeking refuge after clashes with Arakan Army rebels within Myanmar, the defectors are now under the care of Assam Rifles, the paramilitary force responsible for border security in the region. They have been safely transported to the Assam Rifles camp at Parva, near the trijunction of the India-Myanmar border.

In the past few months, hundreds of Myanmarese soldiers have fled to Mizoram amid a civil war in the country sparked by the 2021 military coup.
