Tura, Jan 18: North Garo Hills district got its shot at glory on Thursday with two of its athletes winning gold medals in the javelin events at the ongoing 5th Meghalaya Games in Tura. In fact, javelin events saw complete domination by the Garo Hills, an oddity in the current Games which usually sees toppers from Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
In the men’s javelin event, Tushal M Sangma from North Garo Hills (NGH) secured gold with a throw covering 48.55 meters. Biljakra A Sangma from South Garo Hills (SGH) clinched silver with a throw of 46.13 meters, while Pantera A Sangma from West Garo Hills (WGH) secured bronze with a 45-meter throw.
This meant that South Garo Hills, previously at the bottom of the medal tally, opened their account with a silver in athletics, and the only silver for the district so far.
In the women’s javelin event, Praichi G Momin from NGH district claimed gold with a throw of 29.87 meters, followed by Melibad Kro of Ri Bhoi securing silver with a throw of 27.89 meters. Senitha G Momin, also representing NGH district, took home bronze with a throw covering a distance of 25.07 meters.
