Artisans of South West Garo Hills get acquainted with handicraft schemes, GI registration

Ampati, Sept 30: A one-day workshop focusing on various schemes under the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) Shillong was held at BADO Multi Facility Hall, Ampati in South West Garo Hills on Monday.

Organized by the Handicrafts Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles, the event aimed to educate artisans and stakeholders on Geographical Indication (GI) registration, e-commerce, GEM Portal, GST, and other craft-related topics.

The event commenced with a welcome speech by the Regional Director of the Northeast Region Office, Guwahati, who provided a brief overview of the workshop’s objectives. FM DCIC Ampati followed with an address, emphasizing the importance of supporting local artisans.

Wilfred Challang R Marak, ADC, Ampati and Cherak R Marak, Functional Manager, DCIC, Ampati gracedthe event and shared their insights on the significance of handicrafts in the region’s economic development.

Rima Sonar, Assistant Director (Handicrafts), presented the schemes offered by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), while Bhaskar Barua, Project Officer, NER Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPC), delivered a PowerPoint presentation on export opportunities.

A session on marketing strategies and GI tagging was conducted by Elisha R Sangma, Digital Marketing Lead of Living Roots USA LLC, followed by a session on financial schemes like Mudra and PMJJBY, led by the Branch Manager of SBI. Representatives from PRIME Meghalaya also discussed the financial aid available for local artisans.

The workshop concluded with interactive sessions where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and gain further insights into the support available for the handicraft sector.
