Guwahati, Aug 27: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have started a massive search and rescue operation to find three devotees who drowned in Parsuram Kund on Friday.
Parshuram Kund is situated within the Kamlang Reserve Forest Area in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Kund is surrounded by a dense forest of Ruddraksha trees, the fruit of which is considered sacred to Hindu ascetics as well as general believers in the faith.
It’s a very unfortunate incident. We have started a search operation by engaging NDRF and SDRF teams,” said an official of the Lohit district administration.
Arunachal Pradesh has been witnessing heavy rains and landslides for the past several days. The Lohit River has been flowing with a heavy current.
Damchen Norbu, Lohit district disaster management officer said, “The SDRF is searching in upper stream near Demwe site while NDRF is looking at downstream near Lohit Bridge of Alubari. However, the flooded river has been made day-long efforts futile, but we are still hopeful and continue search.”
According to reports, three members of a family from Kakopathar in Tinsukia district of Assam who were swept away by the strong currents of the Lohit River have been identified as Manoj Shah, his wife Shobha Devi, and his mother-in-law.
His 12-year-old son and father-in-law were on the bank when the incident happened.
“We have launched the search and rescue operation to trace out the bodies. But the ferocious Lohit River is impeding the process”, Lohit SP Minjom Ete said.
Meanwhile, Lohit district administration has appeal visitors to avoid trip to the Kund during flood to prevent any untoward incident.
