Itanagar, May 15: Local residents of Arunachal Pradesh staged a massive protest on Thursday against China’s recent move to rename 27 locations within the Indian state. Waving the national flag and chanting slogans, protestors in Hawai town burned a photograph of Chinese President Xi Jinping to express their outrage.
The protest came in response to what demonstrators described as an illegal and baseless attempt by China to assert claims over Indian territory.
“This is not 1962, it’s 2025. We strongly reject China’s renaming of 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh. We are part of India and will always remain so. Arunachal Pradesh was never part of China, and their claims have no legitimacy,” said a local resident.

Another protestor echoed the sentiment: “Their claim is baseless. How can they rename our places? Arunachal is an integral part of India, and as residents, we are proud Indians. If war happens, we are ready to give a befitting reply.”
Residents also pointed out the region’s difficult terrain, emphasizing their preparedness to support Indian armed forces if needed. “It’s not easy to survive in these conditions. But we are ready for any eventuality and to give logistical support to our forces,” said another demonstrator.
The Ministry of External Affairs has also issued a strong rejection of China’s renaming exercise, reaffirming India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh.
